DEVELOPMENT
NEWS
Radio
News
There's news aplenty at KSDS-FM (Jazz 88).
The
all-jazz radio station received a Corporation for Public Broadcasting
grant that, in addition to funding, will pay license fees that have, to
this point, precluded Jazz 88 from streaming its programming on the Internet.
Because of the CPB grant, that will change in the near future when Jazz
88 is again heard worldwide via the Internet.
Listenership
is up at the station. The fall 2002 Arbitron radio ratings show that Jazz
88's audience has grown 14 percent since it was last documented in spring
2002.
Jazz
aficionados wont have to change stations for the top news stories.
KSDS has added NPR News (National Public Radio) at the top of the hour
during the morning and afternoon commutes. This has been made possible
through the cooperation of our good friends at San Diego's other public
radio station, KPBS.
In
November, KSDS received a $5,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation at
the recommendation of an anonymous donor. This gift will enable the station
to catalog its 15,000 CDs and 5,000 vinyl LPs by artist, title and individual
band members. Figuring each CD or LP has an average of 12 tracks, that
adds up to almost 250,000 titles that have to be cross referenced.
Among
a variety of promotion activities, Jazz 88 hosted the Jazz Cabaret Stage
for First Night, where 10,000 San Diegans celebrated New Year's Eve at
Marina Park in an alcohol-free, family festival.
Jazz
88 has initiated a fullly featured Membership Card program in which donors
receive a membership card that entitles them to discounts at theatrical
and musical venues throughout the area, as well as at selected restaurants.
Information is available at www.ksds-fm.org.

With
the new board now in place, members are eager to begin their fund-raising
role. They are soliciting donations and sponsors for the 2003 Scholarship
Gala to be held in May and reviewing campus projects for possible fund-raising
efforts. An alumni drive and internal (faculty/staff) membership drive
are planned for the spring. For more information on the Miramar College
Foundation, call Pat Keir, Miramar College president, 619-388-7834.
Hawthorne,
Caterpillar Give $20,000
Pat Keir, Miramar College president, along with Mary Benard, technical
careers dean, and Gary Newhouse, advanced transportation technology dean,
toured the Hawthorne Machinery facilities in Rancho Bernardo recently
and walked away with $20,000. The donation marks the eighth year that
Caterpillar, Inc. and Hawthorne Machinery Co. have matched contributions
to Miramar's diesel and heavy equipment technology program. Howard Blair,
vice president/division manager of Hawthorne Machinery, presented the
check. To date, Miramar College has received $260,000 each from Hawthorne
Machinery Co. and Caterpillar Inc. to support the diesel and heavy equipment
technology program.
Car Payment
A check for $10,000 was recently donated to Miramar College by six-year
auto partner DaimlerChrysler. Mary Benard, technical careers dean, said
the funds will be used to equip the new Advanced Transportation Technology
Center, currently under construction. Miramar College is a designated
CAP (Chrysler Apprentice Program) partner, providing industry specific
technician training. The program, which is currently offered by the college
at Mira Mesa High School, will be moved to the campus upon completion
of the ATT Center, anticipated in about 16 months.
Corporate
Council Holiday Event, New MembersIn December, Corporate Council members
were honored at a holiday harbor supper cruise, underwritten by Enterasys
Networks and Sempra Energy. District trustees, presidents and the chancellor
joined council members aboard the classic yacht Renown.
Enterasys
is one of four companies that have recently joined the Corporate
Council. The others are Men's Wearhouse, Southwest Airlines and WearWithAll.
